Why Solo Travelers Need a Selfie Stick

I was a skeptic of the “selfie stick” for far longer than I should have been. This common accessory of tweens and hipsters was just too repellent to make it seem like something I should not only own but carry with me on trips. But when I started traveling alone more often, my parents started asking for photographic proof that I was alive and well in whatever country I had ended up in that weekend. They told me I was “sending your parents to an early grave” being a woman traveling alone.

What pushed me to finally buy one was when my friend JP starting bringing a selfie stick with him and posting amazing photos of himself in far off lands, at the top of cliffs and waterfalls. I looked back at all the photos I took of myself and thought they could definitely be better, so I went on Amazon and finally got one.

The first few times I used the selfie stick I felt incredibly embarrassed by it (this is the one I ended up getting). There I was in the middle of Helsinki, Finland with my phone at the end of a poll, taking a photo of myself using the Bluetooth connected remote at the end. Thankfully I was all alone in the area and as soon as other tourists got there I immediately collapsed it and put it back in my pocket. Eventually I warmed up to using it, each time felt less goofy as I saw that the pictures I was getting actually looked pretty good.

Where the selfie stick seemed to shine though was as a party accessory. I never thought to carry mine at night but after a few drinks in Riga, my new friend Drew pulled one out of the bag he was carrying with him and I thought what a brilliant idea! We crowded around and laughed at how ridiculous it was taking a photo with your phone on a stick then appreciated how cool the pictures looked later.

That sealed the deal for me, and made the selfie stick my new favorite travel gadget.
