When it comes to long flights (12 hours or more) by the time you get off of the plane it can feel very disorienting, like you’ve traveled through space and time to get to a whole new world. Lots of people find that the change in time can ruin the first few days of their vacation, sleeping at odd schedules and feeling lethargic. I’ve been fortunate enough to figure out a few tricks to help me hit the ground running and make the most of the limited time that I have to explore a new city.
Get some sleep on the plane.
This is often easier said than done but if you find the right combination of noise cancelling headphones, neck pillows, and general exhaustion you might be able to shut your eyes in one city and end up on the other side of the world by the time you open them again.Stay hydrated.
I’ve made this mistake, suffering from headaches, lethargy and general ickyness, enough to always walk on the plane with my own water and make sure that I drink it all before landing. Carry an empty water bottle with you and fill it up in the airport to save money too.Change your watch ahead of time.
If you still wear one that is. Manually changing the timezone on your cellphone while on the plane can help too. It’s important to live in the present time and try not to think about what the “real” time is back home.
Take a flight that lands at night.
I never do this because I’d rather get off the plane and start exploring but if you find yourself struggling to fight jet lag, getting to your destination at night can help a lot.
Shower as soon as you get off the plane.
Especially helpful if you usually shower in the mornings. I have found that this helps reset my internal clock to recognize that it’s a new day. It also feels great to wash the gross recycled germs from the plane off.
