Dealing with Wanderlust - Part 1
Travel is my passion and hobby. If I'm not on the road or planning my next trip I feel lost. Even living in one of the greatest cities in the world (New York) doesn't do much to assuage the feeling of being stuck in one place.
In 2016 I decided to do all my traveling until the end of March 2017, and then stay home for the rest of the year to figure things out. Travelling constantly is my passion. It's what keeps me going, but at the same time it can also be a huge distraction from everything else in life. Taking lots of smaller trips also has kept me distracted from the larger trips that I also have enjoyed in the past. When I was making a lot less money and first out of college I would take one vacation a year and now that I'm more established in my career was taking up to six or seven smaller trips a year and one big one. All that travel has been amazing but it's meant that I'm not saving up for a bigger adventure down the road.
It was while mediating in a conference room at the office that I had a vision of myself 30 years from now sitting on a veranda somewhere outside of America taking a conference call with a client that if I was going to escape the cube monkey life that I needed to get serious about 3 things: saving money, growing this blog, and building up my freelancing business. When not contributing to Travelling Fool I've been consulting start-ups and entrepreneurs on how to build their apps or websites as the Briz of All Trades.
Even with this goal in mind I find myself dealing with the call of the wild on a daily basis. I turned off my travel alerts, hit a wall with writing for my blog, and have been busy trying to both get my client's product launched and figuring out ways to get more client work on the side. Suppressing the need to get on an airplane or train and get out of New York City has been the hardest struggle of them all.
To meet my wandering needs I've tried to do some local tourism - visiting the World Trade Center, wandering through street fairs, playing bar bingo, spending more time with friends and family, and just trying to appreciate the city I call home.
Soon it will all lead to a comprehensive guide for New York City by a native New Yorker for all of my readers.
