When I was a kid I remember being at my grandmother's house one Saturday afternoon and hearing the roar of my family having a conversation. I was small enough not to really follow what they were talking about but then my grandfather came over to the tv room and was about to put a double picture frame down on the wooden bar near the doorway. I came over and quietly looked on and saw the photo - my grandmother and grandfather holding this large furry koala. I examined the photograph closely while my grandfather left and then came back with a large wooden, decorated, boomerang. I asked them what it was like, holding the huge koala, and my grandmother said, "they're so big, but so light, and their claws are very strong."
I was immediately enamored with the idea of going to such an exotic location. Over the years as Steve Irwin rose to popularity and I began to meet amazingly friendly Australians on my travels and through my favorite video games, Australia as a destination rose higher and higher on my list until finally I had the perfect situation arise to make it to the top of my list. First, I work in media where my office closes for the days between Christmas and New Years. Second, I had over 100,000 points from a credit card I signed up for last year (the Chase Sapphire Reserve). Third, and perhaps the most exciting point, I have an online friend to visit! One of my clan mates lives in Australia and after all these years I'll get to put a face to the voice and name.
Finally I'll be able to fulfill my childhood dream of seeing Australia, at least a bit of it. I'll be in Melbourne and Sydney. Then it's off to New Zealand, because why not since I'm already in the area, and finally Taiwan to eat my heart out before heading back home. I can't wait!!
